Mathematics
and geometry have always been one of the subjects that less sympathy has
aroused among the students of the world's schools and I believe that almost
everyone will agree with what I say.
Now, this
will have some explanation, since it is not normal for so many students to
agree on their difficulties in learning this subject or what little they like.
After some time reflecting on this fact I came to the conclusion that the main
culprit of this failure is the traditional teaching system that continues
perpetuating generation after generation.
It is the
same educational system that has caused thousands of young people to lose
interest in a subject ... in various subjects ... in all subjects, causing them
to abandon their studies.
That is why
it is in our hands, that of the future teachers, to change this obsolete system
and to make the students come back to enjoy in class and, in addition, to know
that they work with things they will need throughout their lives.
Therefore,
when I began to teach children what geometry is, it would not begin by making
them copy a list of figures and names, but first they must be made to
appreciate the art that can derive from geometry, so that from that students
are motivated to make meaningful learning.
To do this
you have to choose a theme close to them; one of the most repeated excursions
in the Andalusian schools is the visit to the Arab palace "The
Alhambra", which is something that we can take advantage of a lot since it
is of the places where we can best appreciate geometry and mosaics, which
surely they appreciated but they did not stop to look at them from the
mathematical point of view, so once they do, they will discover that
mathematics and geometry have existed and been used for many years, which we
can take advantage of for the students' intrinsic motivation.
